Pygmalion(皮格马利翁)背景知识

Love and expectation make a better man

Have you ever heard of the story of Pygmalion(皮格马利翁), a gifted artist who one day made a stone statue of a beautiful lady and fell in love with her, hugging and kissing her every day, only to be hurt more deeply by the cruel reality that she was not in the flesh? Thus, the miserable(痛苦的) man couldn't bear the torture(折磨) and turned into the great goddess, pleading to turn the statue into a real woman. His wish was granted owing to his touching sincerity. Bernard(萧伯纳) , one of the greatest writers, was inspired as well and wrote down this fatastic story as one of the most classic operas -Pygmalion, which was then updated into a film titled My Fair Lady, winning the 37th Oscar Award in 1964.

Born in the gutter(贫民窟), Eliza Doolittle, heroin of the film, wasn't well educated. With a terrible accent, she could only be a flower girl. Maybe she had got accustomed to banality(平庸) and dullness, but what she doesn’t know was that a great change will take place in her life, a flower girl! On a rainy evening, she dramatically met Professor Higgins and his partner Corner Pickering. The former, an expert in phonetics, was convinced that the quality of a person's English accent decided his position in society. And the latter was a loyal friend of Higgins. With the help of the two gentlemen and after weeks of working extremely hard at practising English pronunciation, Eliza made great progress, eventually succeeding in speaking properly as well as presently and becoming an elegant lady.

In my perspective, it's more like an opera than a movie. Since every role sings freely to express himself or herself, which adds charm and fun to the movie, and makes everyone quite lovely and characteristic. What impresses me most is the childish quarrels between Eliza and Higgins, the comical(滑稽的) gesture and amusing words along with the attractive music made the scene even more dramatic. Every time I laughs heartedly, I'm convinced that the movie has miraculous magic that every one who watches it will fall in love with it !

From the movie, we can personally feel the glamor(魅力) of the movie which doesn’t fade after decades, and more importantly, audience can learn something practically. For instance, the quality of one's English accent is of great significance.  Also, Ms.Doolittle set an example for us, on which we can see dignity and ambition, without which she couldn't have turned to professor Higgins  for an opportunity to improve herself and would have stayed in the gutter till the end of her days. From Professor Higgins, we can also learn something, from the opposite, though. (I'm sorry, professor, but that's the truth.) As Ms.Doolittle once compared after condemning him as a selfish brute(残忍的人), Colonel treats a flower girl as a duchess(女公爵) while the professor treats a duchess as a flower girl. So now we know how pride and prejudice and discrimination harm others and therefore we must get rid of them. On the contrary, love and expectation can greatly inspire one and even bring a complete change. Therefore, if you intend to change a person, love him earnstly and bring great hope to him.

In a word, I'm quite fortunate to have a chance to savor(品味) the gratifying(悦人的)  movie. Hopefully, you could discover the adorable secret treasure, too!
